Effects of Child Disability on the Family: Experiences of Families in Ejisu, Ashanti Region.

Undergraduate Thesis

  • Abstract: Majority of the attention when it comes to issues of disability is largely placed on the PWD and all they need to be able to function effectively in society. However, the families especially the nuclear family of such people also experienced a lot of challenges that do not only affect the PWD but spreads to other aspects of the lives of the individual members of such families. This is a study conducted to gain an in-depth understanding into the effects of having a child with disability to families in a suburban context. The study was conducted in Ejisu the municipal capital of the Ejisu Municipality. The target population for the study was all families that had a PWD preferably under the age of 20 years. The study adopted a qualitative approach using a case study design. Fifteen participants were used for the semi-structured interview out of which two were males and thirteen were females. The responses were manually analyzed using a thematic data analysis method. The study revealed that most suburban families with a PWD were affected in terms of the individual members, finances, stability of marriage and subsequent child birth. The study also revealed that families use to support systems to be able to cope effectively with the situation and these were their personal resources or strength and their social support. Hence, the study recommends that government and all stakeholders must enforce the Disability Act that points out that all disabled persons must have access to free education and also that a special education program focused on the families of disabled individual be implemented to help such families know and understand their situation and how to best manage it for effective functioning.
