Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU):staff midwife; Trauma and Specialist Hospital, Winneba -Ghana.

Because of my total commitment, discipline, and exceptional ability to work, during annual staff reshuffling, I was allowed to head a new Kangaroo Mother Care(KMC) unit in the NICU, providing services ranging from the admission of preterm babies, assessing their needs, planning care and growth monitoring to facilitate easy discharge. Through evidence-based initiatives, we have had about 80% more successful stories of the survival of premature neonates than ever before.

Duties/Responsibilities;

1. Planning care for preterms with or without direct supervision alongside other multidisciplinary

team members

2. Intravenous cannulation

3. Phlebotomy or taking blood samples

4. Tube feeding(Nasogastric and orogastric)

5. Intravenous drug administration on schedule

Recovery ward -staff midwife; Trauma and Specialist Hospital Winneba -Ghana

Working as a staff midwife in the recovery unit was an interesting exposure as this helped develop my leadership and teamwork skills. Tasked with the role of student preceptor, I took responsibility for assisting students, junior colleagues, and health assistants in orientation, supervising their daily duties as well as being accountable for delegating appropriately.

Duties/Responsibilities

1. Administration of drugs without any oversight

2. Monitoring of vital signs to detect deviation from normal

3. Blood transfusion administration

4. Resuscitation of asphyxiated babies

5. Monitoring for an adverse effect of anesthesia

6. Controlling and managing hemorrhage post-operatively .

Staff midwife - La General Hospital, Accra Ghana

Working as a staff midwife on a rotational basis as a new postgraduate midwife, maintaining an attitude of resilience and a total commitment to the provision of excellent client care, with an opportunity to work across various clinical departments and this endowed me with a myriad of knowledge and clinical skills essential for providing first-class patient care services as well as a positive and excellent approach to work in a stressful working environment.

1. Provision of exceptional pre-surgical care which included physical, physiological, and psychological )and post-surgical care including pain management to help restore client health.

2. Conducting prenatal assessment

3. Utilization of accurate and legible documentation

4. Conducting assisted deliveries

5. Assisting client to make informed decisions on birth control methods

6. Outpatient and inpatient services

7. Providing Postnatal care services

8. Provision of care medically to the aged, children, and critically ill patients.
