
MATERNITY
• Developing and advocating for individualized birth plans with mothers
based on health concerns and preferences.
• Management of first, second, third and fourth stage of labor using the
partograph.
• Head to toe examination of pregnant and postpartum women and reporting
abnormalities to senior midwife and obstetrician.
• Head to toe examination of newborns and reporting abnormalities to
hospital pediatrician.
• Assessing newborns and resuscitating where necessary.
• Assisting mothers to position babies to breast for feeding.
• Pre and post operation care of pregnant women and gynecological cases
such as myomectomy.
• Educating parents on danger signs in newborns, cord care, personal and
environmental hygiene, importance of exclusive breastfeeding, importance
of postnatal care prior to discharge.
• Giving and repairing of episiotomies and perineal tears.
• Working with maternity team in management of obstetric emergencies such
as postpartum hemorrhage.
• Receiving newborns from the theater.
• Iv cannulation for patients, taking blood sample and administration of
prescribed medications (intravenous, intramuscular and oral).
• Dressing surgical wounds aseptically.
• Performing vulva toileting after obstetric and gynecological surgeries.
• Contemporaneous documentation of all midwifery procedures.
• Catheterization
• Referral of patient to tertiary hospital for further management.
NICU
• Head to examination of neonates and reporting abnormalities to hospital
pediatrician.
• Intravenous cannulation and taking blood sample of newborns
• Administration of prescribed medications and setting up infusion using
iv fluid regulator.
• Assisting parents with pre-term and low birth weight babies with
kangaroo care.
• Setting up improvised CPAP for preterm/ babies with respiratory
distress.
• Setting up oxygen therapy, monitoring and recording of vital signs.
• Providing health education on cord care, danger signs in newborn,
importance of exclusive breastfeeding to parents, assisting mothers to
position baby to breast.
• Nasogastric (NG) tube insertion and feeding of babies with feeding
difficulties.
• Maintaining detailed medical records.
• Weighing of neonates on the ward.
• Neonatal resuscitation where necessary.
• Setting up phototherapy for jaundiced babies.
• Providing emotional support to parents of critically ill babies.
• Referral of neonates to tertiary hospital for further management.
• Taking and recording of patient’s vital signs.
• Vaccination of babies under supervision of community health nurse
• Weighing of babies and plotting on growth chart in maternal and child
health record book.
• Provided family planning services under supervision (pills and injectables).
• Provided comprehensive supervised antenatal, intrapartum and
postnatal care to patients.
• Trans-out of patient per hospital policy.
• Performing the role of circulating nurse at the theater
