Ghana uses a 6-3-4-4 system, meaning six years of primary school, three years of junior secondary school, three to four years of senior secondary school, and four years of university.
The language of instruction is English, although students may also study in one of eleven local languages for the first three years.
After the ninth grade, students take the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and must perform well to be admitted into senior secondary school. Senior secondary school students study a core curriculum of English, math, science, and social studies, and also choose elective subjects from one of seven groups.
