SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND DISPOSAL AND MANAGEMENT OF E-WASTE IN GHANA.
Team Lead; Baseline assessment on e-waste recycling in Accra: This comprised a comprehensive survey of all e-waste-related companies and associations in Ghana to assess their current capacity and their plans for recycling. Through these visits of companies and informal sector e-waste scrap dealers in Accra and Kumasi. Valuable trust and networks in the e-waste recycling industry. The baseline studies gave a snap view of the current industry situation in Ghana. The study was conducted by GIZ and report submitted to GIZ and the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology; Ghana.
Training and Capacity Building for informal recyclers. Designed the first policy framework for the E-Waste programme, implementation of socio- economic activities, and training strategies concerning sustainable e-waste management, economic development, environmental awareness as well as health and safety awareness.
Formation of Scrap Associations: The project actively supported the formation of Scrap Dealers Association, in Kumasi and improvement of already formed associations and currently helped them to develop modalities to establish a buy-back centre. Through this technical support, a strong network with the informal scrap dealers and have become informal technical advisor to their operations in Kumasi.
Capacity Development for GASDA and Dagomba Scrap Dealers Association: Constructed and implemented a recycling facility in Kumasi for the Dagomba Scrap Dealers Association.
Incentive Payment System for e-waste fractions: have played a leading role and coordinated the development of the incentive system, the first pilot of incentive payment system for Kumasi. Through this pilot, polyurethane insulation foam was saved from burning to pollute the atmosphere and was was diverted for sound recycling. The results of this pilot payment system will served as a lesson for the national e-waste strategy.
