KEY RESULT AREAS/MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To participate in the training of staff. To supervise and aid in the development of trainee BMS’s and support workers, such as MLA grades, and direct their duties as requested by senior staff.
  • To support and mentor junior staff as part of a culture of CPD and staff
    development.
  • To work in an efficient and effective manner, organizing own work and that of others as appropriate.
  • As part of the Blood Sciences team, to participate in the multidisciplinary training of all Blood Sciences staff. Through group or individual teaching or training sessions so that all Blood Sciences staff attain competency in techniques as required.
  • To rotate throughout the various sections of the department where appropriate to maintain competencies.
  • To ensure standards of performance and competence are maintained. To report to the Senior BMS where your performance has fallen below required competence due to inexperience or gap in rotation, etc. To perform remedial training to correct competence.
  • To participate in job/work experience and recruiting schemes by representing the Trust, Department and Profession at and within these events.
  • To attend external meetings and courses and represent the department at those meetings as appropriate.
  • To use knowledge gained on courses and training to add to the service delivery and to disseminate that knowledge to others as directed by senior staff.
  • To attain and maintain multidisciplinary competence in the other specialisms of Blood Sciences to the required levels in order to participate in the shift rota as a multidisciplinary BMS.
  • To participate in cross site working as directed by the Lead BMS team and General Manager.
  • To participate in the Trust appraisal system.
  • To maintain personal professional competency and professionalism following recognized CPD routes and attending courses as appropriate and available.

Haematology

  • Used Beckman coulter uniCel DxH 800 also to analyse full blood count, Beckman coulter UniCel DxH slidemaker stainer for making blood films and staining (makes blood film manually if analyser breaks down).
  • Perform Beckman coulter uniCel DxH 800 and slidemaker stainer maintenance daily, perform, review and record QCs.
  • Syxmex XN-Line -TS -2000, SP10, InterLiner

Coagulation

  • Used Sysmex C5-2100i for routine and special coagulation profile *Gene Exper for Haemoglobin Variance and Factor V Leiden

Blood Transfusion

  • Gestation PLUS, IH-1000, Ortho-Vision analyse is used for routine group and save Card and Tube blood grouping, blood Cross-matching of patient plasma against donor cells.
  • Reagent acceptance testing including Anti-A, Anti-B, Anti-D, Control, and ABO D cells.
  • Temperature recording. Accepting blood from NBTS (National Blood Transfusion Service) and deleting any expired or used blood stock from the system.
  • Antibody screening and Antibody panel
