It was upgraded to teaching hospital in the year 2009 to support medical education. The hospital has an ultramodern 812 bed capacity. It provides high-level, quality expertise for comprehensive tertiary health services including, Surgery, Medicine, Accident & Emergency, New-born and Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Pharmacy. It serves as a referral hospital for the three northern regions of Ghana. It cooperates with the university for Development Studies to offer undergraduate and graduate program in medicine.
